"Oh no" and "Great!": A Revelation Summer

Soon I will be beginning a new Summer sermon series. It will take us
the 11 weeks from June 21 to Labor Day weekend. With this series
I am doing a couple of new things that I haven’t tried previously.
First, I will work cooperatively with Pastor Kevin. I am aware of pastors
who work in pairs and some in small groups to come up with sermon
ideas. One friend meets with four other pastors every Monday via Zoom
to work on the weekend’s sermon. I have not worked on sermons
cooperatively before so it will be interesting.
The second new thing is that the series will be on the book of Revelation.
While I have preached a handful of individual sermons over the years on
Revelation a ten week series is new.
When I have mentioned the subject matter to a handful of folks I have
received two different reactions:
Reaction one is, “Great, that will be interesting.”
Reaction two is, “Oh no.”
The fact is that the final book in the Bible generates as much curiosity as
it does misunderstanding. While 10 weeks is not enough to exhaust all
preaching possibilities within the book, I believe it will help us to
understand the book’s message and meaning for Christians today. As
with all sermon series each one stands on its own, but you will get more
out of it if you collect the whole set.
Pastor Kevin and I have laid in a supply of books that represent a broad
perspective on Revelation. We will study and talk together and then
write our own sermons to be preached at PUMC and Chino Valley UMC
respectively. I hope and pray that we all learn a lot from this journey
together.
See you in church,
—Pastor Dan
